  • How it works: During the procedure, a balloon-tipped catheter is inserted through a blood vessel (usually in the groin) and guided to the mitral valve. Once in place, the balloon is inflated to stretch open the narrowed valve, improving blood flow. This is a less invasive alternative to surgery and is typically done when the valve narrowing causes significant symptoms or heart strain.

2. BPV (Balloon Pulmonary Valvuloplasty)

  • What it is: BPV is a procedure used to treat pulmonary stenosis, a condition where the pulmonary valve(which controls blood flow from the right side of the heart to the lungs) becomes narrowed, making it harder for the heart to pump blood to the lungs.
  • How it works: In BPV, a balloon catheter is inserted through a vein, usually inthe groin, and guided to the pulmonary valve. The balloon is then inflated to open up the narrowed valve, allowing blood to flow more easily from the heart to the lungs. This procedure is commonly used in infants or children, but adults can also benefit from it.

3. BAV (Balloon Aortic Valvuloplasty)

  • What it is: BAV is a procedure used to treat aortic stenosis, where the aortic valve(the valve that controls blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body) becomes narrowed, making it harder for the heart to pump blood effectively.
  • How it works: A balloon catheter is inserted through a blood vessel, often in the groin, and guided to the aortic valve. The balloon is inflated to stretch the valve open and improve blood flow. BAV is often used in emergency situations, for example, in newborns with congenital aortic stenosis or in elderly patients with severe aortic stenosis before a more permanent treatment like valve replacement.
