OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)

OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography. It is a medical imaging technique that uses light waves to take detailed cross-sectional images of the inside of blood vessels and other tissues. It's particularly useful in cardiology for evaluating coronary arteries and detecting problems like plaque buildup, calcium,fibrous tissue and thrombus inside the vessel. This technique helps in identifying whether stent has expanded properly or not, if there is any dissection or residual blockages inside the vessel.

How OCT works:

Light Waves: OCT uses a light source, usually a near-infrared laser, to send light into the blood vessel or tissue.
Reflection of Light: The light is reflected back from different layers inside the vessel or tissue. The amount of light reflected is recorded, and this information is used to create very detailed images of the vessel walls and structures inside.
High-Resolution Imaging: OCT provides high-resolution images (much better than traditional angiography or even IVUS) with cross-sectional views, allowing doctors to see very fine details of the vessel walls.

What OCT is used for:

Coronary Artery Imaging: In cardiology, OCT is mainly used to examine coronary arteries, especially to assess the extent of atherosclerosis(plaque buildup) and other issues such as stent placement or vessel dissection.
Guiding Treatments: OCT is helpful during procedures like angioplastyand stent placementto ensure the correct positioning of stents and to evaluate whether blood flow has been restored effectively.
Plaque Characteristics: OCT can give detailed information about the type and structure of plaque inside the arteries, which can help determine the best treatment strategy.
