IVUS (Intravascular Ultrasound)

IVUS stands for Intravascular Ultrasound. It is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the inside of blood vessels, particularly coronary arteries, to help doctors assess the extent of blockages, exact diameter of vessel from inside, any blood thrombus or clot inside vessel, presence of calcium burden inside the vessel. This technique helps doctor deciding exact size of stent to be used and expansion of stent after implantation. Using this technique reduces the risk of stent under expansion or stent thrombosis.

How IVUS works:

Catheter Insertion: A small, flexible tube (catheter) with an ultrasound probe at its tip is inserted into a blood vessel, usually from radial artery of wrist or from femoral artery of groin.
Sound Waves: The ultrasound probe emits high-frequency sound waves that bounce off the walls of the blood vessels, creating real-time images.
Visualizing the Inside: The sound waves return to the probe, and the data is used to create detailed images of the artery's inner structure, including the size of any plaque buildup or narrowing.

What is IVUS used for?

Assessing Artery Health: IVUS is commonly used in coronary artery disease (CAD)to visualize how much plaque has built up in the arteries, which can help doctors decide whether a stent is needed or if further intervention is necessary.
