Pacemaker Implantation

Pacemaker implantation is a medical procedure in which a small device called a pacemaker is surgically placed under the skin to help regulate the heart's rhythm. A pacemaker is used to treat heart conditions where the heart beats too slowly and abnormal, or irregularly (arrhythmias).There are different variations of device implant for different heart conditions.

How Pacemaker Implantation Works:

1. Insertion of the Pacemaker:

The procedure typically begins with a small incision made near the collarbone.
The pacemaker, which is a small, battery-powered device, is placed under the skin in this area.
One or more leads (wires) are threaded through veins into the heart, where they are attached to the heart tissue.

2. Function of the Pacemaker:

If it detects that the heart is beating too slowly or irregularly, the device sends electrical signals through the leads to stimulate the heart, making it beat at the proper rate.
Modern pacemakers can be programmed to adapt to the body's needs (e.g., increasing heart rate during exercise).

3. Types of Pacemakers:

Single-chamber pacemaker: It has one lead, usually connected to the right atrium or right ventricle.
Dual-chamber pacemaker: It has two leads, one for the right atrium and one for the right ventricle, allowing it to coordinate the timing between the upper and lower chambers of the heart.
Biventricular pacemaker: This type is used in patients with heart failure. It helps synchronize the beating of both the left and right ventricles, improving heart function.
AICD (Automated Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator): This device is implanted when patient with heart problem with low pumping develop abnormal fast rhythm intermittently. This device terminates fast heart beats to normal rhythm

Why Pacemaker Implantation is Done:

Slow Heart Rate (Bradycardia): When the heart beats too slowly and doesn't pump enough blood to the body, a pacemaker can help by regulating the heartbeat.
Arrhythmias: For people with irregular heartbeats that cause symptoms like dizziness, fainting, or fatigue, a pacemaker can restore normal rhythm
Heart Block: In cases where the electrical signals in the heart are blocked or delayed, a pacemaker can bypass the block and ensure the heart beats regularly.

Recovery and Aftercare:

The implantation procedure is usually done under local anaesthesia, and most people can go home in 2-3 days
After the procedure, patients are typically advised to avoid heavy lifting or certain activities for a few weeks to allow the leads to settlein.
Regular follow-up appointments are needed to check the pacemaker's function and battery life.
