Device Closure

Device closure therapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to close certain types of heart defects, specifically Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)and Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), without the need for open-heart surgery. Here's a simple breakdown:

1. Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)

What it is: An ASD is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the two upper chambers (atria) of the heart. This hole allows blood to flow from the left atrium to the right atrium, which can lead to heart strain, and over time, may cause complications like heart failure or stroke.
How device closure works: In device closure therapy for ASD, a small, specialized device (specially designed ASD closure device) is inserted into the heart using a catheter (a thin tube).The catheter is typically inserted through a vein, often in the groin, and guided to the heart. The device is positioned over the hole, where it expands to seal it. Over time, the heart tissue grows around the device, effectively closing the hole.

2. Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)

What it is: PDA is a condition where a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth. This vessel normally allows blood to bypass the lungs while the baby is still in the womb but should close shortly afterbirth. If it remains open, it can cause abnormal blood flow and lead to problems like increased blood pressure in the lungs and heart failurewhich leads to reccurent chest infection, breathing problems in children.
How device closure works: In PDA deviceclosure therapy, a catheter is used to place a device in the open ductus arteriosus. The device works by blocking the blood flow through the ductus, allowing the body to heal and close the vessel naturally. The procedure is much less invasive than surgeryand is usually performed in children or adults with this condition.
